The AV project ‘DesertSeal’, part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, is once again on display as part of ‘Born out of Necessity: Contemporary Industrial Design.’ The exhibition, which examines how design intervenes across a range of experiences, including medical emergencies and natural disasters, was organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, and Kate Carmody, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design and is on view in the Architecture and Design Galleries from March 2, 2012 – January 28, 2013.

‘DesertSeal’ is an iconic design by AV, demonstrating their practice of combining cutting-edge technology with sustainable thinking to create new solutions for the future. The one-person, light-weight, inflatable tent takes advantage of the physical properties of hot-arid environments to cool itself. The characteristic vertical shape allows cool air to be pulled inside from the top of the tent by means of a small solar-powered fan. The aluminum coated shell also helps to reflect the heat of the day.

Dates: March 2, 2012 – January 28, 2013
Location: Architecture and Design Galleries, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), 11 West 53 Street New York, NY 10019

Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler will lecture at ‘The Sculpture Center’ in Cleveland next 25th April.

The Sculpture Center and the Italian Consulate invite you to a talk by the Italian and Swiss architects Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler founders of the studio Architecture and Vision. The architecture and design practice specializes in aerospace, architecture and art and the crossovers of these fields. The studio recently has been crossing borders into the sculpture field with the 30m high portable tower of the ‘Machina di Santa Rosa di Viterbo’, The ‘AtlasCoelestis’ installation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the public sculpture ‘LaFenice’ in Messina, Sicily. On the cutting edge of space art is their kinetic sculpture ‘AtlasCoelestisZeroG’, created specifically for microgravity environments, which was carried into space on NASA’s final mission of the space shuttle Endeavor and inaugurated on the International Space Station in May 2011. Their very popular traveling exhibition, ‘Architecture and Vision: from Pyramids to Spacecraft’, was shown in Cleveland’s Great Lakes Science Center last winter and is on view April 20-May 15, 2012, at the University of Cincinnati’s College of DAAP.
After the talk in the Euclid Avenue Building Bay 3, join Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler for an informal reception and test drive one of five Cinquecento Fiats, courtesy of FIAT of Strongsville, that will be on display in our parking lot.
Reservations by phone or email to The Sculpture Center are required.

The traveling exhibition “From Pyramids to Spacecraft” will be shown at the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. The exhibit features selected projects by the design studio Architecture and Vision, founded by Italian architect Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler, with offices in Munich, Germany and Bomarzo, Italy.

Vittori and Vogler have worked together since 2003 and have received numerous important international recognitions. In 2006, their prototype for an extreme-environment tent, ‘DesertSeal’ (2004), became part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Vittori and Vogler were named Modern-day Leonardos in the same year by the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for the exhibit “Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius.” They have both worked in the aerospace field and this challenges the way they think about life on Earth. They share a keen interest in technology and the endless beauty of the world.

Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler will open the exhibition on Friday, April 20, at 5 pm.

Date: April 20 – June 15, 2012
Opening time: Friday, April 20, 2012, 5 pm
Location: DAAP Library, Room 5401, 5480 Aronoff Center for Design and Art, University of Cincinnati, 342 Clifton Blvd., Cincinnati, OH 45221, USA
