020 Bird House
In 2006, AV was selected for the ‘Space-Designer Designed BirdHouse’ edition promoted by the Japanese BirdHouse Foundation, to design a bird house. Conceived to respond to the local ecosystem, the structure is the result of minutely detailed studies to provide shelter and sustenance to migrating birds, optimizing the available resources – sun, wind, rainwater – and the specific daytime heat gradient. The birdhouse turns into the wind, protecting the nest with its sail and allowing the birds to have optimal flying conditions.
Project Details
Background: The Bird House Foundation invites designers to design bird houses as a symbol of a creative interaction with nature
Objectives: Create a structure which is built in the bird’s environment (the air) employing different technologies
Concept: Reach the sky, the bird’s home
Materials: Polyamid carbon fiber, wood, clay, steel
Structure: Cantilevering carbon mast held by ceramic base and timber fold-out stand
Technologies: Pottery, selective laser sintering, carbon fiber filament, sail-making
Wind resistance: 60 km/h (estimate)
Energy production: 5 solar cells power five 600mAh NiMH batteries for LED lights; energy consumption five 50mA LED lights
Assembly: 20 minutes, 1 person; 3 birds to complete the nests
Typology: Bird Nest
Design Team: Architecture and Vision - Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler
Hand Painting: Michelle Gordon, Chicago, USA
Engineers: G-Engineering, Italy
