050 Fiore del Cielo
Each year, on the night of September 3rd, the city of Viterbo celebrates its patron Santa Rosa with a big public event. Thousands of people gather to assist the triumphal passing of the 'Macchina di Santa Rosa': a 30 meters high structure, weighing 5 tons, which is carried by 100 men (Facchini) through the narrow medieval streets of the city. The competition-winning design of 2008 'Fiore del Cielo' is bridging the gap between tradition and modern technology. The base recalls the iconographic and sculptural elements, which are typical of the medieval city of Viterbo – fountains, palm trees and lions. Above it, a triple-helix structure winds up vertically, upwards around three spheres, which represent the stages of Santa Rosa’s life,. 'Fiore del Cielo' is illuminated by hundreds of candles and enriched by thousands of red roses. Inside the helix, lift by 3 groups of triumphant angels, three globes of diverse colors represent different stages of Santa Rosa’s life. The highest globe supports the statue of Santa Rosa, lifting her into the heavens. Every 5 years a new design is introduced. At several stops, rose petals gently fall from the tower.
