Born out of Necessity | New York

The AV project 'DesertSeal', part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, is once again on display as part of  'Born out of Necessity: Contemporary Industrial Design.' The exhibition, which examines how design intervenes across a range of experiences, including medical emergencies and natural disasters, was organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, and Kate Carmody, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design and is on view in the Architecture and Design Galleries from March 2, 2012 – January 28, 2013. 'DesertSeal' is an iconic design by AV, demonstrating their practice of combining cutting-edge technology with sustainable thinking to create new solutions for the future. The one-person, light-weight, inflatable tent takes advantage of the physical properties of hot-arid environments to cool itself. The characteristic vertical shape allows cool air to be pulled inside from the top of the tent by means of a small solar-powered fan. The aluminum coated shell also helps to reflect the heat of the day.
